Doctors are human beings, and make occasional mistakes just like anyone else. Even professional race car drivers have car insurance in case they make a mistake while driving that damages or injures someone else. I don't see much difference between that and malpractice insurance. Given how litigious people in my part of the world have gotten, and how many frivolous lawsuits garner huge settlements, I absolutely understand the need for malpractice insurance for all kinds of professionals-- not just doctors.
Really my original point was how much we place on Doctor's shoulders, verses what they are able to deliver. The doctor has achieved a hallowed position and in many cases we won't allow them to be human (and of course we do have the doctors who overrate themselves too). We (general 'we') often expect miracles and are only too ready to sue when said miracles don't occur, or when it all goes wrong.
Well...uh..
Date: 2003-04-13 06:01 am (UTC)It's not exactly an exact science, you know. Not like being a car mechanic, right?
But that being so, why are we supposed to follow their advice like they actually do know exactly what they are doing?
And don't get me going on mental health 'professionals'.
