So Shangrila was hit by an interesting Denial Of Service attack today. I don't know the full details but my own investigations revealed the following:

  • Many chars were created and spammed people with everything from lines and lines of just dots, through to the message "DEATH TO TS MU*" on multiple lines.
  • These chars logged in, spammed, then either logged out or were logged out forcefully.

I deduce the following:

  • Either there were no admins on that had the power to siteban or...
  • It was a multiple site attack.
  • Most likely multiple bots were used regardless of which it was.

I suspect this means that new char procedures are going to have to be tightened. Setting new chars to be gagged and giving them special commands to use to ask questions until they've chargenned may be one way to go. Another way may be to have a formal char generation procedure. I think they also may need to scale back on how many people a person can page, or how many pages can be sent in period of time; but that's painful.

Of course, the best thing to do would be to catch the immature idiot(s) that did this and show them the error of their ways. But I think that's unlikely.
